About the Centre

The Plant Sciences Research Centre (PSRC) is a specialized research unit under the National Institute for Scientific and Industrial Research (NISIR). The Centre is dedicated to advancing plant science research and developing innovative solutions that contribute to national development and improved livelihoods.

Historical Background

Established in 1965 as a Tree Improvement Research Unit under the Agricultural Research Council of Central Africa. Initially focused on supporting the mining industry through forestry research, the Centre has since expanded its scope to include human health, food and beverages, and cosmetics.

Notable Achievements:

  • Development of a formulation for combating bilharzia
  • Propagation of indigenous trees (Mpundu, Masuku, Mungongo)
  • Use of Jatropha for cosmetics and biofuel
  • Production of mini potato tubers
  • Land reclamation using Jatropha plants

Organizational Structure

Current Research Focus Areas

Herbal Medicine Development

Research on medicinal plants, toxicity assessment, and development of nutraceutical & pharmaceutical products.

Tissue Culture & Propagation

Micropropagation of bananas, sweet potatoes, potatoes, Artemisia, ginger, turmeric, and pineapples.

Afforestation & Reforestation

Establishment of woodlots and use of Mukula for climate mitigation and land reclamation.

Providing disease‑free, high‑quality planting materials to farmers and out‑grower schemes.

Affordable nutraceutical and pharmaceutical products from locally grown herbs.
